Fortunately, it delivers a thoughtful, emotionally resonant story that stands head and shoulders above the bombastic films dominating today’s box office.

The premise is intriguing. An elderly, wealthy Ishar Singh Grewal (Naseeruddin Shah), wakes up one morning in Delhi and insists on traveling to Sargodha, now located in Pakistan. His driver tries to explain that crossing into another country is no simple matter, but the old man refuses to listen. Their journey ends at the border, where they are turned back, and shortly afterward Grewal’s health deteriorates.

Confined to bed, he drifts between the present and the past. He mutters incoherently, remembering fragments of memories and repeatedly insists that he must reach Sargodha. It becomes clear that he believes someone is waiting for him there, or that there is a promise he has yet to fulfill. His family, however, cannot make sense of his obsession.

The mystery draws in his grandson Nirvair, played by Diljit Dosanjh, who returns from Canada after learning of his grandfather’s illness. As he spends time caring for him, Nirvair becomes determined to uncover the truth behind the old man’s longing. The story unfolds through scattered memories, faded photographs, fragmented conversations, and a gradual piecing together of the past.

The film is beautifully told. It is slow-paced at times, but the storytelling remains engaging throughout. The cast is excellent, led by a remarkable performance from Naseeruddin Shah. He has delivered many great performances over the years, but this is probably one of his finest. His portrayal of a man caught between memory and reality is deeply moving and utterly convincing.

Rajat Kapoor is excellent as the old man’s son Iqbal, while Diljit Dosanjh brings warmth and sincerity to the role of the grandson. The grandfather’s tale is told in flashbacks and the younger version of the grandfather is played by Vedang Raina.

We first saw Vedang Raina in The Archies. The film was forgettable. Devang Raina was not. Even at that time, you could see that this guy had talent. In that film, the only two actors who actually had potential were Devang Raina and Agastya Nanda. And they both have been offered film roles since. Raina delivers a decent performance here – not quite outstanding, but time and experience should help with that .

The film’s romantic thread centers on the young grandfather and his love interest, played by Sharvari. What emerges is not simply a love story but also a meditation on the enduring scars of Partition. The film captures the pain of families torn apart, homes abandoned, and lives uprooted as people were forced to rebuild in unfamiliar lands. These historical memories lend the story an emotional weight that extends beyond the central romance.

As with most Imtiaz Ali films, there is tremendous attention to detail and atmosphere. Every frame feels carefully considered and beautifully put together – the cinematography is excellent. The one aspect that feels slightly underwhelming is the music. Imtiaz Ali’s films often feature unforgettable soundtracks, but here the music, while pleasant, never reaches those heights.

Even so, this is a genuinely rewarding film. In a year that has barely produced a couple of noteworthy Hindi releases, Main Vaapas Aaunga stands out as a thoughtful, nuanced work. It is proof that great storytelling, strong performances, and emotional depth can still be more powerful and more entertaining than mindless spectacle.

Verdict: Highly recommended. If you’re looking for a mature, moving film anchored by outstanding performances and a touching exploration of memory, love, and loss, this is well worth your time.

Kidwise: PG-13 . Recommended for teens and older due to mature themes related to Partition, loss, and emotional intensity.

Rating: 4/5.
