Bizarre Bollywood video courtesy Israel

I hadn’t see this when the rest of the world reported it, but here is what Stratpost says about it : ” . . .another measure of this eagerness to do business with India is also the innovative video marketing which an Israeli arms company, Rafael displayed on large screen televisions at their stall at […]

“Inspired” films – Ugly aur pagli

If you haven’t seen “Ugly aur pagli”, read this review, and avoid it like the plague. I’m a glutton for punishment , I think, or an eternal optimist – depends upon your point of view. Because I rented the American version of “My Sassy Girl”. And really it isn’t any better watching existential angst, or […]

Saving Gandhi’s legacy : hypocrisy anyone ?

See my earlier post; it is indeed the week for stupidity. I refer of course to the efforts by the Government of India to save its “national heritage”. By “national heritage” I do not mean the beautiful, ancient buildings that lie neglected (the last time I visited the Taj Mahal, there were honeycombs on the […]

The Congress Party and disassociation from reality

I know, I know – stupidity hath no bounds. Especially coming from India’s eminent political party which claimed credit for the Slumdog Oscar win : In an unmistakable resonance of the previous NDA government’s `India Shining’ slogan, Congress floated the idea of an `achieving India’ and listed among the milestones the Indo-US nuclear deal, Chandrayaan, […]

The obligatory post on Slumdog

After Slumdog swept the Oscars, everyone is on the SM-mania. A day later, I can hear the NDTV anchor gush “ Well, we still can’t get over the Slumdog win” – and more of the same. Ah, well ! On CNN, reading a similar story, I see Jamaal’s character described as a “teaboy”. The hero […]

Of pink chaddis and Valentines Day

Valentine’s Day has come and gone. Muthalik was kept in preventive custody. Pink chaddis went out to the Shri Ram Sene office, as duly observed by the news channels. The pubs were bharo-ed. The Bajrang Dal and other chauvinistic outfits which would have otherwise threatened bodily harm to people found “celebrating” Valentine’s Day turned non-violent, […]

Roadies 6.0 : Hell down under

The Roadies 6.0 : Hell Down Under is well underway. The auditions were pretty interesting with “two” Raghus interviewing the candidates. And it has never ceased to amaze me at the number of people who turn up to try out for Roadies, who will do anything to get on the show. You’d think their life […]

Mumbai horror

I wake up morning after morning, to news channel after news channel covering the same thing. Terror in Mumbai. Armed terrorists taking hostages, shooting at will. Openly, brazenly. But why the shock the surprise ? If you’ve been to India, have lived there, you know the condition of law and order there. Politicians condoning this […]

What exactly is that ?

Sameera Reddy walking the ramp for designer Falguni and Shane, at Wills India Fashion Week ’09 : What is this – the design from scrap contest ? (And I’m not talking about Sameera). Also look at the audience – they seem slack-jawed in shock.

Music : blast from the past

Two beautiful songs I re-heard recently. The first is “Maeri” by “Euphoria”, whose lead singer is Palash Sen. Sen is a doctor who also sings, or it could be the other way around. Euphoria’s songs are mostly energetic, almost folksy numbers, with an urban twist. Maeri is comparitively a soft, slow number : [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7E1xbX-QSGY] The […]
